Gayle is expected to be back for today’s super 8 game, and will look to give India its first big test. India has been untested so far in this tournament, but appear to have a settled team. The only two questions that they have is Dhoni’s batting position and Irfan Pathan’s place. Should Dhoni continue to come at number 3, or should Raina come in at number 3. I reckon Dhoni’s experience and ability to work singles would come in handy if India loose early wickets and he should come lower down the order at 5. He should be looking to play the same role as Rahul Dravid used to play few years back in the ODI team. Finish the game if things are going well, or rescue the team if they are not.
Irfan Pathan poses a bigger problem, while his batting lower down the order is useful, his bowling lacks the penetration and he gives away too many runs. Playing a specialist bowler like RP Singh or Praveen Kumar might be a better idea, but then the tail looks a bit too long. I guess Dhoni is banking on his long list of ‘part-time’ spinners to bail the side in case Irfan leaks runs.
