With their array of buccaneering batsmen, the West Indies had been tipped as a serious contender for the title.

Yet less than 48 hours after the tournament began, they were knocked out following an embarrassing loss to Bangladesh at Johannesburg.

Chris Gayle, after his memorable hundred two days before, fell for a third-ball duck and the West Indies never really recovered floundering in particular before the accuracy of medium-pacer Syed Rasel who conceded just ten runs in his four overs.

Bangladesh didn't waste much time in getting to their target of 165 winning with six wickets and two overs to spare.

Skipper Mohammed Ashraful hit the then fastest fifty in a Twenty20 international from 20 balls finishing with 61 from 27 balls with seven fours and three sixes.

He and Aftab Ahmed (62 not out) added 109 runs for the third wicket in ten overs to hasten West Indies' exit and Bangladesh's entry into the Super Eights.
