Revenge will be one theme for sure. But bigger than that will be Pakistan’s opportunity to advance to the semi-finals; Sri Lanka’s narrow win over Ireland now means that any kind of Pakistan win against the Irish almost certainly sends them through to the semis (barring some outlandish scenarios) on net run-rate.

England could still reach the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20. It’s almost worth repeating, so implausible does it sound. After beating the defending champions, India, at a packed Lord’s on Sunday, a straight play-off between England and West Indies beckons south of the Thames, the winner of which will be confirmed semi-finalists. The defeat to the Dutch suddenly seems an awfully long time ago.

The winner of this match goes to the semis, plain and simple. Its the quarter finals!

Teams

England (probable) 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Luke Wright, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 7 James Foster (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James Anderson.

West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Andre Fletcher, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Jerome Taylor, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Fidel Edwards.

The one major concern for Sri Lanka, is their middle order which sustained a horrid collapse of 5 for 40 in the last six overs. It didn’t cost them against Pakistan, thanks to Lasith Malinga’s deadly death-bowling, but it is one area that needs improvement if they are to beat firstly Ireland, then New Zealand and eventually the World Cup. Sri Lanka should get to the semis easily from here on.

Ireland would be looking for another upset win, and a victory for the Irish could spoil the party for the Lankans. It going to be an interesting game to watch.

Will history repeat itself? India was in the same situation in the last world cup in 2007. That time India had lost the first game of Super Eight to New Zealand and needed to win against England and South Africa to qualify for the semis. That time Yuvraj came to the party and he has to that again.

Dhoni is looking in awful form, Raina hasnt done anything till now, Yusuf also had not done anything till the last game, and Gambhir has lost the touch of 2008. It all depends on Rohit and Yuvraj, these two are in form and need to fire.

Dhoni as a captain also has not done well, his bowling changes were shoddy in the last game against West Indies. Harbhajan was taken off after bowling a maiden to Gayle which had eventually led to Gayle’s dismissal. More pressure at that time would have changed the game completely. Then Zaheer India’s best bowler did not even complete his quota of overs!

Dhoni the captain cool is finished!

India: (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha
